Buddha nut pods are hard, woody seed pods with a rounded, cup-like shape and a rough, ridged exterior. When dried, they are dark brown to nearly black, with a thick shell and a hollow interior that opens on one side. Their dense, sturdy structure allows them to hold their shape for a long time in both aquatic and humid environments, making them a popular natural décor choice.
 
In aquariums, Buddha nut pods slowly release tannins that tint the water a tea-like color and can slightly lower pH, while also providing natural shelter for shrimp, fry, and small fish. In terrariums, they work especially well as durable hides for reptiles and small animals, offering a secure, enclosed space while also helping create a natural forest-floor environment and retain some humidity. Before use, they should be rinsed thoroughly and usually boiled or soaked to clean them, reduce tannins, and help them sink.
